Grill sauce's shelf life: when to use and when to toss
As summer approaches, many households break out the barbecue sauce, ketchup, and other condiments stored in the pantry or fridge. But how long can you safely use these sauces after opening?
Unopened sauces: follow expiration dates
Unopened condiments generally remain safe and fresh until the 'Best By' or 'Best If Used By' date listed on the label. This is the manufacturer's recommended expiration date, guaranteeing the product's quality until then.
However, even after the expiration date, the sauce may still be good to eat if stored properly in a cool, dark place. The key is to rely on your senses – check the appearance, smell, and taste before consuming.

Opened sauces: a month or more
When you open a condiment, the 'Best By' date no longer serves as a reliable guide to its shelf life. Instead, follow these guidelines:
Store in the refrigerator at 40°F (4°C) or below. This will help slow bacterial growth and keep the sauce fresh for longer.
Use your senses. Regularly inspect the sauce for signs of spoilage, such as an off smell, slimy texture, or mold growth. If it looks, smells, or tastes unusual, it's best to discard it.
Typically, opened condiments remain safe for 1 to 3 months in the fridge. Some may last even longer, depending on the type and storage conditions.
To maximize shelf life, keep the sauce in the coldest part of the fridge, such as the door shelf, and avoid exposing it to direct sunlight, heat sources, or moisture.
